Understanding Concrete Finishes: Enhancing Your Surfaces

Concrete finishes offer many options to enhance the appearance and functionality of your concrete surfaces. Each finish serves a unique purpose, from adding texture and colour to increasing durability and aesthetics. Let’s explore some popular concrete finishes:

    Stamped & Sealed Finish

Stamped concrete mimics the appearance of various materials such as brick, stone, or tile. This finish is achieved by pressing patterns or textures into freshly poured concrete. Once stamped, the surface is sealed to protect it from stains, weathering, and wear while enhancing its colour and sheen.

    • Pros: Stamped and Sealed finishes are one of the most aesthetically pleasing finishes imitating natural stone, wood, tile and more. The concrete is typically coloured integrally. This finish has a richer concrete mix design, increasing surface durability and longevity. A Stamped and Sealed finish is excellent for patios, sidewalks, borders, and unique-styled shape accents for your concrete project.

    • Cons: Stamped and Sealed finishes are the upper echelon regarding costs and higher maintenance as the concrete needs to be resealed every one to two years. This type of finish can also be more slippery when frozen or wet; however, we suggest adding traction shards for safer walking. It should also be noted that the surface level of stamped and sealed finishes can be ungauged, not flat.
    Exposed Aggregate Finish

Exposed aggregate concrete reveals the natural beauty of the aggregate (such as stones, pebbles, or shells) within the concrete mix. After pouring, the surface is treated to expose the aggregate by washing away the top layer of cement paste. This finish creates a visually appealing, textured surface with excellent slip resistance.

    • Pros: Exposed Aggregate finishes are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Smaller uniformed aggregate creates a dense, strong, durable, and long-lasting look. Exposed Aggregate weathers well in Canadian climates and is easy to bring back to life if appearance becomes dull over time.

    • Cons: Exposed Aggregate needs regular maintenance. They are ideally resealed every 1-2 years. The surface feels bumpier in bare feet (i.e., patio or pool applications), and if the aggregate is overexposed, the surface will weather, scale, and flake as it is more prone to damage. Precise timing and attention are required to expose aggregate to a sufficient depth layer.
    Broom Finish

A broom finish is achieved by dragging a broom or brush across the surface of freshly poured concrete. This process creates subtle grooves or ridges, providing traction and reducing the risk of slipping. Broom finishes are commonly used for outdoor surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, and patios.

    • Pros: A Broom Finish is the best finish for traction. It is the standard, practical, functional, and economical choice for concrete finishes. The finish requires low maintenance. You may add some colour to create a more decorative look.

    • Cons: A Broom Finish is rougher to walk on barefoot and has a design that is not original due to its historic popularity. A Broom Finish can potentially trap dirt and dust in pores if not sealed.
    Smooth & Texture Finish

Smooth finishes offer a sleek and modern appearance, ideal for indoor surfaces like floors and countertops. The surface is carefully troweled to achieve a smooth texture, perfect for showcasing decorative elements or intricate designs. Texture finishes, on the other hand, add dimension and visual interest to concrete surfaces. Various techniques, such as power troweling or machine finishing, can create unique patterns and a polished finish.

    • Pros: A Smooth and textured finish brings older concrete back to life. It is durable for high-traffic areas and protects against moisture and stain, depending on the smooth/texture finish. A smooth and texture finish flattens floor imperfections and creates a hard, dense surface that adds traction. It is aesthetically pleasing and low maintenance.
    • Cons: A Smooth and textured finish can be slippery and cold to the touch if not heated. Moisture can be an issue migrating or getting trapped in the surface if it is not sealed correctly/densified. It also enhances the appearance of cracks.
    Integral Colour

Integral colour involves adding pigments directly to the concrete mix before pouring, which allows for consistent colour throughout the entire thickness of the concrete, eliminating the need for surface-applied stains or coatings. Integral colour is available in various hues, offering endless possibilities for customizing your concrete surfaces.

    • Pros: Integral Color is aesthetically pleasing as it creates contrast. It is a stronger, more durable mix design and offers alternative colour options to acid- or water-based concrete stains. Unlike broadcasted or top-seeded colour applications, integral Color doesn’t fade when sealed and holds colour. If any of the concrete scratches or chips, the colour is the same underneath. It can be added to any concrete finish or concrete application.

    • Cons: Integral Color has a limited color pallet to earth tone colours when mixed integrally. There can be added costs as it can fade over time if not regularly or adequately sealed. Integral Colour can be very tough to colour match to older existing concrete. Water ratios must be precise when pouring in large areas or different batches.
    Concrete Coatings and Stains

Concrete coatings and stains provide additional protection and aesthetic enhancement to concrete surfaces—coatings like epoxy or polyurethane offer durability, chemical resistance, and customizable finishes. Stains penetrate the surface of the concrete, creating rich, translucent colours that enhance the material’s natural beauty while providing UV resistance and waterproofing properties.

Whether you want to add visual appeal, improve safety, or increase durability, choosing the right concrete finish is essential for achieving the desired results. Consider your project requirements, aesthetic preferences, and maintenance needs to select the perfect finish for your concrete surfaces.

    • Pros: Concrete Coatings and Stains are decorative and a long-lasting way to protect your concrete floor. For example, a garage floor against the elements brought in from the road during winter. It is easy to clean, food safe, stain resistant, has non-slipped coatings, and has a decorative look. It adds value to an older, well-structured floor. Concrete Coatings and Stains provide an original one-of-a-kind look or feature to your project as there are many options to choose from (finishes, epoxies, aspartic, urethanes, etc.). Above all, it is easy to bring back to life.

    • Cons: Concrete Coatings and Stains Finish is a tedious preparation and application process. No coating is perfect and can be hard to remove or bond to existing concrete. Some coatings require regular maintenance, and some will melt at high temperatures. It is not UV resistant and will yellow and appear cloudy over time if used outdoors. If not adhered sufficiently, it can bubble, blister, or peel.
